Abstract

This study explores the lived experiences of Indonesian prospective EFL teachers in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) during a one-month teaching practicum. This phenomenological study explores the experiences of four prospective EFL teachers, three female and one male, aged 20–22, who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and reflective journals, then analyzed phenomenologically by identifying key statements, developing meanings, and synthesizing experiential themes. The findings reveal that the participants view AI as a pedagogical and psychological partner rather than a replacement for teachers. AI supports lesson planning, the provision of instructional materials, classroom activities, and assessment, while also boosting participants' confidence and readiness. These findings highlight the importance of using AI critically and responsibly in fostering the readiness and competence of prospective EFL teachers.
